The Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan is nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, between Tibet and India. It opened up to the outside world only in the 1960s. This self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world until five decades ago, combined with the small population of only 755,000 thousand people allow for the country to emphasise protecting its natural environment. The constitution of Bhutan says that a minimum of 60 % of the nation has to be covered by forest! For this reason Bhutan still remains unspoilt and has managed to keep its natural environment, as well as its cultural and spiritual heritage very much alive. Similar to the neighbouring countries of the Himalayas, Bhutan holds a rich tradition of Buddhist practice and teachings.
